Petites with Curves

Q: I have a very small, narrow waist, and hips with a slight curve (because of my narrow waist) but are not wide (complete with hip bones that prevent me from wearing belts), which are narrower than my shoulders which are also narrow, but the problem I run into is my rear. I have a *ahem* well rounded rear. What jeans could you recommend?

Have you tried: Apple Bottoms

If you can look past the fact the rapper, Nelly designed them, they're actually quite cute. This is the style that I would look at:

These aren't petite, but they promise to fit your curves, with ample room in the behind. I'll search for other options that are shorter.

I'll be in touch.

Prospere Magazine

Many of you may know Cynthia from her blog Shorty Stories, but get to know more about her new venture, Prospere Magazine.
Which is a great resource for all business women out there -- no matter what their size.

PF: How did Prospere magazine come to be?

The idea for Prospere Magazine started off as a print-only, twice a year magazine/catalog for petite women(think Abercrombie, but much, much less racy) connected to my other site, Shorty Stories, featuring mostly up-and-coming designers and brands that cater to the petite woman. However, over dinner with my father, we decided that it was much too expensive to do,and brainstormed for more original ideas. Dad suggested a business magazine, since there weren't really too many that catered specifically to women, and by dessert, Prospere Magazine was born (though it was nameless at the time). To save money and to cater to the tech-savvy 20 and 30-something, I decided that this would be online only, with articles written by volunteer contributors. Articles would include business, fashion/beauty, food and travel and the first issue debuted on January 8, 2008.

PF: Who's behind Prospere Magazine?
Cynthia Cheng, Webitor-in-Chief

PF: Are you petite? If so, how tall?
I am approximately 5'2"

PF: What fashion advice can you offer petites?

Dress what's right for your body. This means for most petites, calf
length skirts, big prints and big bags are a no-no. Treat capris/shorts
like a skirt. Just below the knee is a great length, and make sure you wear
it with a low heel or a pair of wedges. Don't be afraid of long, especially
if it's a dress. After all, you don't really want to wear a knee length
wedding dress if you're say, getting married in a cathedral, do you?

PF: What should the PF readers look for this month at Prospere?

For the February and March issues, New York-based petite model, Isobella
Jade is writing an article about self marketing. In future issues, I will
also be profiling fashion-related businesswomen who may give advice for
petite women. Prospere Magazine is a magazine for ALL WOMEN, regardless of
height or weight.

PF: What can we look forward to in the upcoming months?
Look for Part II of Isobella Jade's "Self Publishing Means Self Serving" on March 11, 2008, articles on spring and summer fashion as well as exciting profiles of business women in future issues!?

PF: Anything else the readers should know?
All our writers are volunteers. If you're interested in writing, please contact me via my contact page (www.prospere-magazine.com/contact-info)

Q's about Jeans from Readers

Hey Christa!

I chanced upon your blog and I have to say I will be coming back for more tips, I love it.

I've been reading on quite a lot of websites that the skinny jeans are getting boring and going out of fashion! This worries me because I think I look the best in skinny jeans, I'm only 5 feet tall! What do you think about this? Should we continue wearing them? Is there a difference between skinny and straight cut jeans? Also it's been suggested that skinnies make your bottom look fatter and less perky- and smaller women (in my opinion) need as much assets as
possible!

Becky

Hi Becky,

I love the way singer, Jo Jo (pictured above) wore her skinny jeans, this is definitely a style to take inspiration from.

If you think you look great in skinnies, then wear them! They're still very much in fashion this year, but the wide leg jean is the new star. The new "it" jean is the complete opposite of what the fashion world has offered for the last few seasons and they like to go from one extreme to another.

7 for All Mankind - Ginger Wide Leg - Light Weight Mercer

What will always be flattering on all women is a basic bootcut or straight leg jean and they're always available.

Paige - Hidden Hills - Barcelona Blue with Crease

In my experience "skinny jeans" look best on skinny women. While I'm thin, I'm pear shaped and I find they highlight that shape opposed to balancing out my hips with a wider leg jean or pant which makes me look taller. So, when pear shaped PF's want to rock their skinnies I suggest pairing them with low-cut heels.

Skinny jeans can actually create a perky bum, if the right style in chosen. Pay attention to the pockets, if you want to create more shape, try angle pockets or pockets with flaps.

7 For All Mankind - Roxanne Skinny - Mercer

Hi Christa Jean,

Where should your jeans / pants hit you on the waist if you’re petite? My legs and torso are fairly even in length (not really long waisted or long legged, I’m fairly well proportioned), but I can’t seem to find a good point for the waist to hit. If they hit at my hips, I feel like they make me look wider than I am (and since my hips bones protrude, I can’t wear a belt there). But if I wear them higher than my hips, it looks like the pants cut me in half. And where should my tops hit? At the top of my pants? Hips? Waist? Almost all tops are too long, so I need to know where to hem them. I’m at a loss here. I feel clueless, and if I’m going to spend money on clothes, I want them to fit properly. Jen

Hi Jen,

For petites jeans & pants should sit above your hips and since the ultra low trend is gone, most styles in store have a petite flattering rise. This season experiment with a higher waisted pair.

When you wear the higher waisted pair they will elongate your legs. Just to be clear not really high waisted, just a little higher (also called mid-rise). We don't want to become fashion victims here. The Paige denim above (second pic) gives a nod to the trend, while still being super flattering up petites. If you've never tried Paige, they're little miracle workers. Read the description for the whole scoop: Paige - Hidden Hills - Barcelona Blue with Crease

When jeans sit right on our hips, you're right they will make you look wider. That's why us petites should try to find a higher rise pants this season while the trend is hot and then keep wearing them afterwards. Plus they will add inches to our legs, who doesn't want that?

In terms of balancing out your figure, don't worry if you're legs look longer. It's better for petites (and most women) to focus on elongating their legs rather then their torso. If you choose a wide style balance the volume in the pant leg with a great fitting blazer or jacket.

I'm forever in love with gold shoes and golden evening clutches. Gold shoes on bare legged petites= a match made in heaven. Why? they bring old the warm in your skin tone and elongate your legs, because it's a shade similar to your skin color.

Versatile Vest

In earlier posts, Najia asked for tips on how to wear vests. Christa has asked for me to post how I wear my vests. I am 5'1, and so I have to do almost everything to make myself look taller.

Vests are a must have item. One vest with endless possibilites. In the first picture, I paired my vest, which I bought on sale from Artizia, with a basic tank (Forever 21), skinny jeans (Guess) and knee high boots (Seychelles). I used a hat, a long necklace and a bracelet to pull "my going out" look together.

To dress my vest up, I replaced my tank with a basic essential piece, a white button down shirt (Zara), jeans (Joe jeans) and black patent Mary Janes (Aldo). I added simple jewelry to finish my look.

Let the outfit speak for itself!!

Shorty Pantz!

Thanks to the team at the new petite site, being called Shorty Pantz isn't such a bad thing. I got the chance to ask Christina Marie about her new site and e-zine Shorty Pantz. It's another great resource for us petite ladies. Here's what I found out:

PF: When did you start Shorty Pantz and how did you get the idea?

Shortypantz.com was born December 15, 2007. I had been thinking of the concept of an e-zine for chic petite women for over a year by this time, and I decided in the fall of 2007 that it was about time to make my dream a reality. As a graphic & web designer with a passion for unique fashion, I realized that there was a lack of resources for petite women online. I wanted to start something that would bring petite women together through an online community and resourceful e-zine. Hence, Shortypantz.com was born!

PF: Who are the owners?

Christina Marie Dennis - Editor-in-chief - Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada
Elaine Walton - Executive Editor - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

PF: Are you petite? If so, how "tall"?

Yup! Both Christina & Elaine are 5'3".

PF: What do you recommend to the PF readers?

Since we're a new e-zine, we're looking for petite women with a passion for fashion, health & general petite issues to write for us! If you're interested, please contact us at editor@shortypantz.com.

PF: Can you offer any tips and advice for personal style or dressing the petite woman?

Don't walk away from the perfect clothing item just because the sleeves or legs are a little too long. Tailors can work wonders, and so can a sewing class!

PF: What are some exciting things happening for the readers to take advantage of or look forward to?

Look for our Spring Issue coming in March 2008! This issue will be full of wonderful petite fashion advice, helpful stories, and will focus on "Shorties that came before us" (a tribute to petite women in our lives that have made an impact).

Spring Trends For Us!

Spring ahead
The season's hottest looks are art inspired. Lucky for us, designers are working with a pretty palette

LEANNE DELAP

ldelap@globeandmail.com

February 23, 2008

As pretty as it is, spring 2008 is a bit of a dog's breakfast: The main trends - colour, transparency, whites, suiting and pattern - make a pretty package, but they don't tie together with a bow.

"The only line through the season," says Suzanne Timmins, fashion director for Hudson's Bay Co., "is cross-pollination of fashion and art and music. It's art, art, art, right now," making a barking noise. "Miami Basel is the march of the penguins."

Thus, the movement to bright hues and bold prints. "It's the age of conceptual creativity," Timmins says. "Pattern always follows bold colour."

The other major trends are less easy to parse. White is obvious: a blank canvas. Transparency is a bit of a gimmick; it will be a fun add on. Suits pave the way for fall, when fashion will be about simple uniforms again.

As for shoes, while chunky platforms ruled the runways, flats will prevail on the street. (Fear not, height lovers: Some pretty heels can still be found.) Accessories are big - literally. "Go big or don't bother," says Tara Wickwire, public-relations director for the Gap. From seventies-style pendants to big link chains, it's time to pay attention to our necks. Cuffs are still popular too.

And yes, finally, the second run of the eighties is almost over. Get ready for the nineties revisited: bright colour and pattern meets simple shape. It's time to make a statement, ladies.

FOLLOW SUIT

The day suit was almost dead, but it surges back to the front of our closets this spring. Chanel, of course, leads the pack with a sleek red tweed number, a sexy update of the house's classic style. Because it's spring and one can wear bare legs again, the season's chunky heels balance things out nicely. 'The shoes this season are puzzling,' says Vancouver stylist Faranak DaCosta, who herself is investing in wedges. 'The outrageous clunky shoes won't make it off the runway. And face it, we are just not giving up our flats! They are far too comfortable.' Pattern is key to the day suit, but don't mix up your checks and plaids. Matchy-match is the way to go with a suit. Stay with one pattern, and match the shoes to the predominant colour.

Suits Plaid jacket, $298, and pants, $148 from Gant (1-800-652-9839). Tweed skirt suit, $6,525 from Chanel (http://www.chanel.com).

WHITE ON

No one waits for the May long weekend to bust out the whites any more. In Paris, Stella McCartney presented a ghostly collection with layers of frills and frippery. Here in Canada, new designer Ashley Rowe, who works under the label Miss Rowe, offers this voluminous puffy dress. Paired with sheer canary knee-highs and Marc Jacobs sky-blue sandals, it surfs the body; a cinch belt at the waist is the way to go if it feels too muumuu. Remember to balance out white gear by adding ballast, such as classic Frye boots with white jeans. And feel free to mix whites and creams, DaCosta says. 'I love lavenders and greys with whites right now too. The look isn't strict, it's ephemeral, floaty.' White is also a great canvas for bold jewellery choices, Wickwire says. 'Vintage inspired cuffs, statement necklaces and cocktail rings are having a big moment right now.'Dress $850 from Miss Rowe (http://www.missrowe.com).

Jacket Hannii Y hooded jacket, $650 at Holt Renfrew (http://www.holtrenfrew.com).

Jeans $128 from Penguin (http://www.originalpenguin.com). Blouse Phillip Lim, $295 at Holt Renfrew.

Shoes Marc Jacobs multitone heels, $550 at Davids (http://www.davidsfootwear.com).

Frye campus boots, $350 at Ron White.

Accessories Yellow knee-highs, $2 at Winners (http://www.winners.ca). Envelope clutch, $128 at Roots.

J. Rox Originals by Jane Apor necklace, $425 at Finn (416-961-0101).

POP GOES THE WORLD

After years of basic black, then some tasteful taupes and burgundies, we are now embracing full-on fabulous colour. The fuchsia Jil Sander shift on our cover says it all. In the fall, we fell for canary yellow and electric blue. Spring brings both soft sorbet colours and bold oranges and pinks. Things even begin to venture into nineties neon. 'The thing I want most right now,' DaCosta says, 'is a neon yellow tank. But stay with a single bold colour, you can't have a battle going on between your feet and your shirt.' And stick to basic shapes, Timmins says. 'Bold colour is enough of a statement.'

Dresses Jil Sander hot pink dress, $1,395 at Marc Laurent (http://www.marclaurent.com). Orange chiffon dress, $463 from Sand (http://www.sand.dk). Coat Burberry trench, $685 at Holt Renfrew. Shoes ABS bronze sandals, $185 at Capezio (416-597-6662).

BS black pumps, $128 at Browns at the Bay (http://www.brownsshoes.com). Accessories Wooden bangles, $50 and $32, and necklace, $65 at Banana Republic (http://www.bananarepublic.com). Prada clutch, $1,065 at Holt Renfrew.

Busy bodies

The patterns on offer are not for shrinking violets. Following the boffo Balenciaga spring collection with hydrangeas as big as your head, big florals are big news. Suddenly, even a little shift dress can deliver a punch. 'Funnily enough, tall or full-figured women can pull off big prints best,' says the Bay's Timmins.

'Of course, it takes a certain attitude too. It is the opposite of what people usually think: Big prints can actually make you look slimmer. But petite women can be engulfed by pattern. You can get the trend with smaller scale.' As to the question of mixing patterns, Timmins suggests staying with one 'ground' colour. 'And don't mix florals with florals, or plaids with plaids. Some women just have a knack, and when it works, it works. When it doesn't - scary!' When in doubt, leave one pattern in the closet.

Dress $195 at Banana Republic. Shoes Thierry Rabotin sandal, $395 at Ron White.

Accessories J. Rox Originals by Jane Apor bracelets, $360 at Finn. Bubble Collection rings, $135 to $165 from Alex Schleicher Inc.

SHEER PLEASURES

The new buzzword in retail is 'body-con,' Timmins says (as in body-conscious). That means tight, tighter and tightest underlayers, such as long Lycra skirts pulled up to become strapless dresses. Worn overtop the body basics, filmy shells provide camouflage. 'Fabrics have been getting lighter every season,' Timmins says. 'There was nowhere else to go but sheer.' To be clear, the look is more sexy than scandalous, as in the long, nude layered halter dress by Canadian designer Stephen Trigueros. But transparent can be dangerous, Timmins warns. 'It is best done in small doses. A shell under a blazer, lined of course. A sheer jacket over a bodysuit. And I was thinking about how I worked this trend the last time it was in fashion [1997] - as a sheer skirt over leggings.'

Date Wear

Hi Christa,

I have a date coming up to a basketball game, what should I wear? I don't want to look a little kid in casual boring clothes. Any ideas? Also, I was wondering if there was a way to wear skinny jeans with this outfit because I love skinny jeans!!!

Thanks, I love your blog. It is the highlight of my day.

Lily

Hi Lily,

I hope you read this before your date. As you can see from the images, Eva Longoria Parker 5'2 is always dressed to courtside perfection. She is most often wearing jeans and seems to favor skinny jeans at the games.

You can wear skinny jeans one of two ways for the game; either with tall boots or a low cut heel. Depending on your climate, I know I'd still be wearing the boots.

Show minimal skin and be comfortable. You should be able to jump around and have fun up this date.

Wear layers like Eva. Try a simple tee and a wrap sweater or a fitted jacket/blazer.

Hoop earrings are a great accessory for the occasion and leave the rest of the jewelry simple.

Have Fun!

PF Gets the Scoop from Heidi Klum and more...

VICTORIA’S SECRET AND HEIDI KLUM REVEALED THEIR SECRETS TO GETTING RED CARPET READY
AND FORECASTED OSCAR TRENDS IN STYLE, HAIR, AND MAKE UP.

WHAT:
On Thursday, February 21st, as the countdown to the Oscars began, Victoria's Secret Beauty experts in the fields of hair, makeup and styling (as well as one of the world's most famous supermodels, Heidi Klum) revealed their secrets to getting Red Carpet Ready. Petite Fashionista was able to ask a few Q's too.

WHO: Heidi Klum; Victoria’s Secret Supermodel Linda Hay; Victoria’s Secret Makeup Artist Helena Faccenda; Hairstylist to Heidi Klum Mary Alice Stephenson; Contributing Fashion Editor, Harper's Bazaar

Here's what I asked the beauties:

PF: How to choose heels that are comfortable or how they make the sexiest of shoes more comfortable?

Mary Alice Stephenson: Make sure to try on shoes in the store and be honest with yourself...nomatter how much you love the style, don't buy them if they are uncomfortable. They'll only get more uncomfortable as the night goes on! There are so many options at all price points for gorgeous shoes that are comfortable, so shop around.

PF: How do you get the look of amazing cleavage if you're not naturally gifted?

Linda Hay: Try a bust-plumping cream like Very Voluptuous Bust Plumper. While it won't make your chest size bigger, a plumping cream moisturizes, plumps, and firms the skin for a voluptuous look. I also like to use some makeup tricks on the décolleté to enhance the look of cleavage. First, take a powder bronzer and dust down between the breasts for an illusion of depth and more dramatic cleavage. Then, apply a dusting of shimmer powder like Sexy Little Things Ooh La La on the top of the breasts above the dress neckline to reflect light and make the bust appear more voluptuous.

PF: What do you keep in your clutch to stay looking fresh?

Heidi Klum:
Evening bags are getting smaller and smaller! In order to make room for my Blackberry in my clutch, I can only bring the necessities with me on the red carpet. I keep Beauty Rush blotting sheets to eliminate shine, a Very Sexy powder and small blush brush, and the lip gloss or lipstick shade I'm wearing for the evening. Sometimes I can't fit the powder compact in a super-small handbag, so I'll just take some shavings of the pressed powder wrapped in a tissue!

"As far as designer stuff, I usually have to get things tailored. Pants always because I'm short -- they're always way too long. So for me, Vintage is a little easier to pull
off."Rachel Bilson, for Seventeen Magazine, March 2008

Eva Longoria, 5'2, shows off this years Spring Trends, in this month's Instyle Magazine.

Although, she been name one of the worst dressed celebrity, Avril Lavigne, also 5'2 is looking really "HOT" in this months Maxim Magazine.

Drew Barreymore, 5'3, looks absolutely radiant in this month's Vogue. Simple, classy, and classic.

Vests & Long Skirts on Petites

Hi,

Thanks a lot for all the effort and time you put into your blog. It is one of my favorites.

I have noticed that here in Australia vests are very popular specially the jeans ones.

What are your tips for petite women who want to wear vests?

My other question is what do you think of long skirts for petites especially in professional settings?

Thanks again,
Najia

Dear Najia,

The short answer is YES to Vests and NO to Long Skirts.

Let's start with vests. Diane Keaton would call it a vest, while Kate Moss calls it a waistcoat, but whatever you call it, they're a celebrity must have.

We've seen them around for a few seasons now and I was starting to get sick of them. But, they're back strong for Spring and I'm ready to revisit. They were seen on the runways of Marc Jacob, Proenza Schouler and many more. The styles were fresh and interesting. There was a strong safari influence at Proenza and Marc added fun details, like a large bow to a few of his styles.

The vest can be worn by all petite body types.
If you have a big bust you can button up the bottom two buttons and accentuate your waist. If you have a smaller bust you can wear the vest two ways; try the "shrunken vest" where you can see between the waist and hip or try it longer so that it's touching the top of the pant.

This is a cozy style to transition into the warmer days ahead.

I also love this version of the vest, another cozy option until we can wear this over our bikinis.

A few petite celebs, who rocked the vest:

To further answer if LONG SKIRTS should be worn on petites I'll get into the details. While my initial reaction wass NO, let's investigate further...
If you're a petite women and you want to pull off a maxi, whether it be a skirt or dress, opt for flowy style with bare skin on top (tube, tank, halter).

Most importantly, if you're going to do Maxi, do Maxi. It shouldn't end anywhere need your mid calf. Go long or go home.

In general I prefer shorter styles on petites but the Maxi and be visited on a casual basis. Much like your favorite sweats the Maxi will proof to be a comfortable option when you can't be bothered to shave.

What to Wear to an Arsty Interview

Hey Christa,

Its Bon here again!!

I have an interview for art college soon, and I'm not sure what sort of thing to wear? Do you think I should wear my own usual thing (Jeans, top, flat dolly shoes) and dress it up slightly?

xx

Hi Bon,

Great to hear from you again. Congrats on the interview!

The most important thing to remember when choosing an outfit for an artsy interview, whether it be at an art gallery, ad agency, or for school is showing your personality. Your look should be very edited and neat. Meaning that whatever your look or style is, it should not be confusing for your first impression with the interviewer.

My advice would be to choose either a funky pair of wide leg dress pants or dark jeans, a nicely fitted top, a wrap jacket, a smart leather bag that can carry your portfolio and a comfortable pair of wedge heels.

Best of luck! Let us know how it goes!

What to Wear to a Baptism

Hi Christa,

First of all let me congratulate you, I love your site. It has become part of my daily readings.

I was wondering if you could help me. I'm attending a baptism in late March and I was thinking of wearing a strapless dress (pictured). How should I wear it and with what accessories? The ceremony is not formal, but since it's in a church, so I should wear something to cover up. Also, I'm the godmother and I'll be carrying her in my arms through all the ceremony, so high heels don't seem like a good idea. What should I do?

Thanks and kind regards, Marta from Portugal

Dear Marta,

Thanks for emailing me.

I love that dress for a baptism, great choice. To cover up for church I would suggest the following options; a cropped 3/4 sleeve jacket, a little shrug, or a fitted cardigan. Black seems to be the best choice, I wouldn't do white because the pattern of the dress may show through it.

For accessories skip the necklace and choose pretty earrings. Either studs or a delicate drop earring and a coordinating bracelet. I love the red bag you have in the picture, but for church a black bag would be more modest for the occasion.

You're right about heels, you should be comfortable and just thinking about the beautiful baby not your aching feet. Avoid a flat shoe though, instead try a low wedge heel, that is low cut in front (like the shoe you're wearing in the picture).

xx

Top Shop Coming to New York

Topshop is on its way to New York. The hip British high-street phenomenon is slated to open its first U.S. flagship on Broadway in October. Topshop is most famous for the Kate Moss' line, and for the collections created for the store by young designers (currently Jonathan Saunders, Louise Goldin, Todd Lynn, Marios Schwab, and Kane himself), and its multifarious fast-fashion ranges.

There is still no delivery to North America from their site, but hopefully with the (I'm sure) amazing success they'll have in NY, it can't be far off.

The Classic Trench

5'1 Hayden looks flawless in this Burberry trench.
For many PFs out there, you're not suffering with -40 degree windchills like some of us in Winnipeg. You can wear a trench if you dare (I try) but it's not always possible. You'd have to add layer after layer - which would add more bulk - just to keep warm in the bone-chilling temperatures.
I write about the trench because spring is right around the corner (I can feel it!) and there's nothing better than a form-fitting trench to welcome the new season. Of course, it's always important to pay attention to length when you're a PF - but it's a great way to accentuate the waist with its attached belt.
It's also a nice way to add a little flair to an outfit, especially with a scarf, or purse, that contrasts.

Here are a few trenches to consider for the spring. I especially like Hayden's classic trench. Where's your favorite place to pick up this timeless piece? We'd love to know.

PS - I know Katie Holmes isn't a PF - but this trench looks amazing on her. I've got to note, because she's tall she can really pull off the skirted bottom but that might be tough on a PF depending on the length of your coat. Again, it all comes down to tailoring, tailoring, tailoring...

How Do You Keep Fit?

I've been sticking to my New Year's resolution to get fit. I've chosen a little cardio, hot yoga, ashtanga yoga and pilates. I have to say that I think I can credit the pilates for the tone that I'm beginning to see. I remembered reading that Hilary Duff (5'2) was using pilates to lengthen her figure, so I had to give it a try.

I want to know how the PF readers are keeping fit? Also, please share your tips for a healthy and active lifestyle.

Choose as many as apply to you:

SHAPE magazine interviewing Hilary:

Do you credit pilates with your weight loss?

With everything! Seriously, my body changed in three weeks. I've always been really muscular; that's why pilates is good for me. I have broad shoulders and if I do weights or something I'll bulk up and feel manly, but pilates lengthens me out. Also you feel really powerful.

Petite Cover Girls

Hi Petites! I'm the latest blogger to join the Petite Fashionista team. My name is Alana, I'm a Winnipegger and I stand 5'0! I look forward to dishing about my petite ideas in the weeks and months to come!

OH BABY!

Another fabulous petite graces the cover of PEOPLE magazine and this time it's Christina Aguilera!

The fellow petite, standing tall at 5'2, is talking about motherhood for the very first time and finally shows us what Max looks like.

Here's an excerpt from the exclusive interview with the singer:

"Max is ready for his close-up: PEOPLE has your first exclusive look at Christina Aguilera and her baby Max, born Jan. 12 in L.A. Go inside their home as the 27-year-old pop star and husband Jordan Bratman, 30, speak out about parenthood and pose for an exclusive family photo album (all in the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday). Says Aguilera of little Max: "He's completely changed my life."

Taller Petite with Long Legs

Dear Petite Fashionista:

I have a problem finding pants that fit. Currently I'm a 10 or 12 petite, but most are too short.I have long legs but a short crotch.

Missey pants fit in the length, but then the crotch hangs almost midway to my knees.

I am just a bit over 5"3".

Do you have any suggestions on where I can shop and find pants that fit?

I need to dress for work, but It's too much trouble to wear skirts and pantyhose every day.

Please help, thanks.

Hi!

I would recommend Alice + Olivia Pants for you.

I tried a pair on at Muskat Brown (a petite shop in Toronto). Their actually not petite in length at all, I would have needed about 5 inches off (I'm 5'2), but the fit would have been worth it.

The designers of Alice + Olivia pants, wanted dress pants that fit like their jeans. So, that's exactly what they did.

They should be great on you. For other options shop Nordstrom's online petite department for ideas and brands to look for.

Happy Shopping!

2 Petites 1 Cover

Here are two of our favorite petite celebs gracing the W cover for March.

Here's part of the article visit W's site to read more and to view more pictures from the shoot.

Sister Act
Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman—cast as rivalrous siblings in The Other Boleyn Girl—have seemingly nothing in common. But as it turns out, the utterly uninhibited bombshell and the self-possessed pixie are more like sisters than you'd think.

It's not easy to find a man whose celebrity crush list includes both Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. Both actresses are gorgeous, sure, but in such different ways that they seem almost of separate species. The 23-year-old Johansson is a modern Marilyn Monroe, complete with platinum mane, fleshy curves and a sexy-throaty voice. The 26-year-old Portman, in contrast, is the very embodiment of delicacy and refinement: small, perfectly shaped features, boyish body and careful Ivy League diction.

My Favorite New Outfit

Sometimes the most simplest outfit can make you feel your best.

This is the case with this simple ensemble that I put together for a birthday dinner this past Saturday. While the cuts are simple, it still shows my personality through the color of the top and the accessories. Notice the shoes? By matching the shoes to your pants you create an elongating effect and to take it one step further choose a pointed toe in a low cut style.

Once again: It's all about the fit.

Top: Versace (perfect fit).
Pants: Vince (purchased at a vintage sample sale, they were already hemmed).
Shoes: Aldo (they have rubber soles, so I didn't break my neck on the ice).
Earrings: Borrowed from my ever stylish friend, Janna.
Dog: Miss Kylie Minogue.

Love her Style...

Here's a PF with great style! Everytime I see her I'm admiring every detail, from her handbag to her her shoes. This fashionista is 4'11 and everything that she owns looks like it was made for her.

Here she is wearing:

Top: Costa Blanca
Tights: Aritzia
Shoes: Nine West
Pendant: From her grandma.

Why this outfit works:

The V-neck is elongating.
The empire waist shows creates longer legs.
The pendant creates a vertical line.
The cropped tights are paired with heels (Never do cropped tights with flats unless they're nude).

Isobella Jade at Work...

Hey Christa,

This past week I did a shoot for the LaCroix handbag company at my studio where I work with Harkrider Fine Arts and represent the painter Anthony John Gray. You can see his paintings in the background. For the handbag shoot I put on my favorite little black dress and jumped on the couch and grabbed my favorite LaCroix bags from Jacquelyn LaCroix's collection.

I have worked with Jacquelyn many times and it is pretty cool to know that Jacquelyn uses petite models in her ad campaign and press kits often. I model on her website and catalogs too and Jacquelyn is an example of a designer embracing the petite woman, and it shows how petite girls are used in ads and for modeling accessory products.
She also likes petite models because, " They make the bag look great, they make the bag look powerful."

I hope you like these pictures!

Eva Longoria at Michael Kors Show

Eva Longoria shines in this gold mini at the Michael Kors show during NY fashion week on Wednesday. I'm on a little Michael Kors obsession, I didn't mean to, he just keeps popping up everywhere.

Why This Look Works:

- The belted waist elongates her legs.
- The gold shoes make her legs look longer.
- The v-neck is elongating.
- The mini is balanced with long sleeves.
- The head to toe color scheme maker her appear taller.

Kylie Picks Up Golden Camera Award

Here's the fabulous petite Kylie Minogue in Germany on Wednesday! The singer looked fab like usual at the 43rd Goldene Kamera Awards in Berlin.

According to Perez Hilton.com (here's a little gossip to go with the fashion):

Despite what you may have read, Miz Mionogue is NOT reuniting romantically with her former flame.

Kylie is adamantly denying reports that she is back with her French actor ex-boyfriend, Olivier Martinez, even though they were pictured together in Paris last week.

Minogue and Martinez broke up last February, reportedly due to his infidelity.

Last Sunday, the pair were pictured at Olivier's Paris apartment. They were then seen walking back to her hotel, and the next day were seen walking Olivier's dog together.

In response to being photographed last week, Kylie stated, "I had dinner with my ex-boyfriend and next thing I know there's a debate about whether we're having a family. We didn't even talk about that. As I've maintained, we're friends."

Good. Kylie's not a dumb dumb.

She knows better than to get back with that cheat!

Small Shoes for Barbie

Hi Christa,

I'm 4'9 and have a size 3.5 shoe. Where (besides Cinderella of Boston) can I get shoes in that size? Nordstroms rarely has my size, and I can't afford to pay for them. I'm 33 and am tired of shopping in the kids department!!

Thanks!

Barbie

Hi Barbie,

Thanks to the internet we now have more options then ever for petite clothing and shoes. Here are some links that carry your size and that are great resources. Please let us know how you make out.

zappos.com offers styles in U.S. size 3 and up, but a much better selection starting at size 4.

smallshoes.com offers links to shops who sell shoes smaller than size 5.

smallshoes.net is a site where they have done all the searching and provided direct links to shoe stores by size (US and UK stores).

daintyfeet.co.uk offers women's shoes in smaller sizes ranging from U.K. sizes 1 to 3 (which converts to U.S sizes 3-5, and Euro sizes 32.5 to 34.5). ***** They have the best selection or you!

piccoloshoes.co.uk  offers classic shoes at moderate prices, starting at size 3 U.S.

small-shoes.co.uk offers sizes 32 to 36 (aprox. U.S sz. 2-6). THEY ONLY SHIP IN THE U.K & EUROPE.

petiteshoes.com is also called Giordano's, they carry size 4-5.5 only.

Here's a few pairs that caught my eye:

Available in sz. 4 / Zappo's / Naturalizer / Finola / SKU #7416743
They come in black & brown which are way more practical but less fun. I had to show the fushia, lol

Available in sz. 3.5 (also smaller & bigger are available) / Dainty Feet / Black Stiletto/ SKU #37061

*The boots shown are sold out in your size, but they say to contact them if your size is no longer available. PICCOLO SHOES

Clueless about Petite Fashion

Dear Christa:
I am in serious need of your help. I have been combing the internet for weeks looking for some sort of rules as to how to dress my short frame. I found a few sites that offered some common sense stuff but I was hoping to find something more in depth. And then I found your site… and to top it off you’re CANADIAN. LOVE IT!!

I am Petite and a little on the curvy side (with a bust and a butt). At four foot eleven inches and about 105 to 110lbs I am constantly questioning if my fashion choices are right for my body. The last thing I want to do is emphasize my height or lack there of. I have a million questions:

  • Should I wear capris?
  • Can I get away with wearing shorts and if so what length?
  • What length and shape of skirt should I wear?
  • Can I wear A-line jackets and dresses?
  • Should I be tucking my pants into my winter boots?
  • What length on top is best portioned for my body?
  • The trend is big jewelry. What scale should I wear?
  • What type of neckline – crew, v-neck, scoop?
  • What scale of hand bag?
  • When I am wearing a flat shoe is it okay to cuff my pants?
  • Can I wear tall boots with a capris pant?
  • What style of dress should I buy?
  • Is there any trends that I should stay away from?
  • What cut of jean should I wear?

My problem is also compounded by my age (26yrs) and the fact that I look even younger than I am. I have just had my first baby and I am constantly getting looks like I am a teenage mom. I have also had trouble getting my career off the ground – people look at me and just assume that I am a child. Having said all this I am from a small town called Midland (north of Barrie) and high fashion simply looks out of place here. How do I balance my desire to look older and more mature with a small town casual?

Sincerely,

Clueless about fashion

Dear Clueless...
Which I doubt you are but, I hope this advice helps you to feel more confident when pulling an outfit together.

Capris: Choose length that's ends past your calf. Never wear capris that end in the middle of your calf, that goes for every petite shape. It will cut off your legs and make them appear...gasp...short and stumpy. Your heels should be low cut in front and a lighter shade to match your skin tone (tan, gold, beige).
This will make your legs look longer.

Shorts: Choose a longer length, like a walking short and pair them with heels (don't even think about flats here). Your heels should be low cut in front and a lighter shade to match your skin tone (tan, gold, beige).
This will make your legs look longer. Also, if you can find it a fuller short would be nice, with soft fabric that flows like a skirt.

Skirts : All of your skirts should fall above just above your knee. Choose skirts with an A-line cut to balance your curves and to accentuate your hourglass shape.

A-line skirts & dresses: Yes you can wear them! Everyday if you want, lol. They're great for balancing out your bust and making the most of your sexy frame. Plus, they're sooo comfy!

Tucking Pants Into Boots:Since Spring is still a few months away for us Canadians, we will still find this trend handy. Choose a taller boot and slim fitting jeans or leggings.

Shirt Length: For your body type embrace Spring's trend of tucking in shirts into skirts and pants and finish the look with a great belt.

Big Jewelry: Go for 1 statement piece, like amazing earrings or a longer necklace. If you choose the earrings no necklace, if you choose the necklace small earrings. My rule is: earrings always. You could also try a nice chunky bangle.

Neckline: A V-Neck is elongating, but make sure it's not too busty on you. If so, try a cami underneath.

Handbag: Big enough to be functional, small enough to see you. When possible try any size clutch, they're great for petites because they don't cut off your lines with straps.

Flat Shoe + Cuffs: Don't do these two together. Cuffs aren't petite friendly, but if you love them you need heels.

Boots + Capris: Again, no. This look is awful even on non petites.

Dresses: Your new best friend! Buy wrap dresses, A-line dresses and any other style that comes in at your natural waist. When in doubt add a belt around the smallest part of your waist. I know you're a mom and trust me, wearing a dress is easier and more comfortable. It's sloppy to chic in one second. If you're looking for casual dresses for the park and playdates try C & C California. C&C California, Inc.

Trends: This season's trend are petite friendly. Stay away from anything that doesn't have shape.

Jeans: Choose a wide leg with heels or a slight boot cut with a lower heel or flats.
